Navigation Main Construction 2005 2006 Problems
|
I'm throwing together this site to detail my efforts at square foot gardening. I started the square foot garden in 2005, but didn't get started in time for much success. I knew this going in, though, so wasn't very disappointed. 2006 was the first real year I considered as actually having a square foot garden. I don't remember exactly how I stumbled across the technique of gardening called square foot gardening, but it was while wandering around on the net. We've had a garden in our backyard with good results something like four of the ten summers we have lived here. We love it for a while, but then it always seemed to get the better of us around August, enough so that we would let it go to seed and grass. Even letting it get away, though, it was still productive. While we never seemed to have any luck with the tomatoes, we would get a ton of green beans, canning 50-75 jars -- which lasted us until the next time we got around to doing a garden. Based on what I saw of square foot gardening, I thought I'd give it a try. Hopefully it would keep us from giving up mid-August and stay productive -- with a bit of help -- all year long. While it might not produce enough for canning, it isn't expected to. I'll address that in some other way. I've made many mistakes in the process already--and I'm just getting started. I'll include the mistakes on the off chance you won't make the same ones. But I will point out some of mine are really dumb mistakes, so it's unlikely you'd make the same. For construction details on my square foot garden, you can click the word "construction" in the text or on the menu at left. I'm not selling it as the best method, just the one I used. Also you can click the 2005 for what went on in my 2005 year (not much) and 2006 for what went on in 2006 (this year). I've also run across a few pests, so I've detailed my fight to rid them in the "pests" section. So far, I've stayed organic for pest control, though I'm not totally organic I suppose, since I have used some manufactured (i.e., commercial) fertilizer. We've already eaten more "green leafy vegetables" this first full year that we probably have in the past twenty. There is no comparison between what we get out of our garden and what we buy; the difference in quality is amazing. If you are here because you are thinking about starting into square foot gardening, go for it. It's fun, it's healthy, and it taste so much better than what you can buy. Good luck! Rick
